Whether in summer or winter, for breakfast, as a lunchtime or snack - pretzels are enjoyed in Southwest Germany at any time of the year or day. And it never gets boring. Because in Baden-Württemberg there are countless types of pretzels that differ in style, appearance and taste.
The New Year's pretzel is a special type of traditional pastry. For many, it is inextricably linked with the turn of the year. Originating from a New Year's ring, it still embodies eternity today and is a must at New Year's breakfasts. Often made from sweet, but occasionally also slightly salted yeast dough, the lucky charms can vary greatly in size and decoration. A particularly expansive specimen can measure up to a meter and weigh several kilos with many braided or cut decorations. According to old Baden custom, the New Year's gifts are sometimes embellished with coins baked into them.
